Adding Fraction with Unlike Denominators

Daily Data Dashboard:

  • Multiple Choice: 84%
  • Open Ended: 79%

Ever have a lesson where the 'car just won't turn over'? Today, adding fractions presented significant challenges to a group of about 8 out of the 24 scholars. Once identified, these scholars were invited for a lunch tutoring session (minus one who agreed to meet tomorrow due to prior lunch arrangements with another teacher). At one point I attempted to jump start the car: "we have a responsibility to master our objective today. Just moving on without meeting our goal is not an option. We cannot just skip over what we do not know or did not learn".

The class walked away from today's lesson meeting our lesson mastery goal of 80% or greater along with another day of improvements on the Open Ended response.

The Introduction to New Material could shorten by 5 minutes along with adding an interactive component. I missed the "Hook" to the lesson, that 2 - 3 minute captivating moment which invests the students' in the learning about to take place. A cohort of students required remediation but the Learning Packet did not provide ample basic level practice problems. I need to revisit the higher order questioning and ensure the questions asked truly work up towards the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.

Tomorrow's lesson is Subtracting Fraction!
